Choppy water today, good for staring at/ painting Choppy water today, good for staring at/ painting and not swimming in. I was very interested here in conveying the thickness/ opacity of the foam. I tried to give it form by adding the cast shadow on the wave itself and where the foam meets the moving water. It’s all difficult but very enjoyable— freeing that the drawing will never be perfect because they pass too quickly. 6” x 9” (nice) oil on panel
Took a short road trip up the Hudson valley with m Took a short road trip up the Hudson valley with my mom last fall. She drove us up 87 to her alma mater, New Paltz, and as we passed exit 16 she mentioned how she always loved that view from that part of the drive up to college. Funny— I had that very exit written in my notepad to paint from the last time I made that drive. Finally went back there today, my first time painting since she passed, and lo and behold, it’s Harriman state park. No wonder we liked the view so much. I wish I could tell her that, and I wish I could tell her that I hiked much further than I planned. Wish I could tell her literally anything or just drive upstate with her one more time, staring out the window. 2nd and 3rd slides are a pair of devastating poems by Gabrielle calvocoressi. They’ve always been devastating in how much they made me think of my relationship with my mom, but of course a million times more now. Last slide is my mom during that trip, getting lunch in New Paltz before making our way up to Hudson. Love you mom, miss you mom, happy Mother’s Day 💓
